Managing Chronic Pain for Our NDIS Patients
Managing Chronic Pain for Our NDIS Patients
As community physiotherapists, one of the most common challenges we see in our NDIS patients is chronic pain. Whether it comes from a neurological condition, musculoskeletal issues, or the wear and tear of daily life, chronic pain affects about 1 in 5 Australians. If you’re living with pain, you are not alone.
For many NDIS participants in the community, chronic pain can be more complex. Alongside everyday causes, conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, or Multiple Sclerosis can reduce mobility, strength, balance, and coordination — all of which increase the risk of ongoing pain. Long periods spent sitting, using a wheelchair, or lying in bed can lead to stiffness, joint contractures, and musculoskeletal pain.
How NDIS Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy is a key part of managing chronic pain. Our team works with NDIS patients to improve movement, independence, and overall quality of life. Here’s how:
- Improving strength and mobility
Weak or impaired muscles can make everyday tasks harder and more painful. Physiotherapists identify these muscles and design exercises to strengthen them. We also teach strategies to complete daily tasks more independently. Building strength and mobility helps reduce pain and keeps you moving safely. - Increasing joint range of motion
Neurological Conditions like Cerebral Palsy can lead to joint stiffness and restricted movement. Physiotherapy stretches tight muscles, assists with joint movements, and improves blood flow. This helps reduce stiffness, lower muscle tone, and ease pain. - Safe positioning in bed or chairs
Sitting or lying for long periods can increase pain and risk of pressure injuries. We create positioning programs and train carers or support staff on safe transfers. Changing positions regularly reduces strain on joints and muscles, helping manage chronic pain. - Assistive equipment and technology
The right equipment can make a huge difference. Physiotherapists can prescribe mobility aids, braces, or AFOs to reduce strain and make moving easier. This helps manage chronic pain and makes daily life safer and more comfortable.
NDIS Support for Physiotherapy
Many NDIS participants can access physiotherapy through their plan under categories like Improved Daily Living or Capacity Building. This funding can cover ongoing therapy, equipment, and support to help reduce pain and improve independence.
